Lettering & Calligraphy
I make words pretty
It's a peculiar thing to talk about hand lettering and calligraphy to the average person. Most equate that solely with wedding invitations and church-lady types. I am far from that. I can do basically any type of lettering style (Latin) and have produced some Japanese work as well.
For my clients, I tend to work very quick and responsively and try to anticipate as much of what they will need in the future. I believe in keeping the momentum of a lettering project going and thrive on feedback and collaboration. When speaking of hand lettering and calligraphy, everything is actually done by hand but I use my technical skills as a designer to deliver sketches and concepts electronically and return final pieces electronically in whatever format needed—be it vector or raster.
For my personal projects, I dote on them. I keep the concept 'in my head' as long as I can as I assemble my tools for the piece. In many ways there is a sense of trepidation before I put brush or nib to substrate. I remain flexible by working with various media but I tend to 'sketch' with self-inking sumi brushes. The fluid and relaxed movement allows me to think and feel my way through the letters—and I oft turn to this brush for several of my typeface designs.
